RE-OPENING OF NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF GHANA-ASHANTI REGIONAL ARCHIVES, KUMASI

Submitted by Thomas K. Aning, Regional Archivist, National Archives, Kumasi.

I am very happy to report to members that the National Archives at Kumasi, closed temporary for inspection and re-organization, has been re-opened to the public. Interested researchers can now use our search-room.

Although the entire re-organization exercise has not been completed, researchers are allowed to inspect those record groups and classes (about 85%) which have been completed. It is significant to note that since established in 1959, this is the first time in its history that the holdings of the Archives have been properly grouped, classified, arranged, and listed to facilitate their use.

Some of the record groups that have been processed and are opened for inspection are as follows:

ARG.1 Records of the Office of the Ashanti Chief Commissionor.

ARG.2 Record of the Ashanti Regional Administration.

ARG.3 Record of the Office of the Eastern Provincial Commissioner of Ashanti.

ARG. 26 Records of the Office of the Western Provincial Commissionor of Ashanti (These records have been transferred to the Brong Ahafo Regional Archives in Sunyani).

ARG.5 Record of the Office of the Southern Provincial Commissionor of Ashanti-Obuasi.

ARG. 6 Records of the Office of the District Commissionor of Kumasi (Kumasi District Administration).

ARG. 7 Records of the Office of the District Commissionor of Obuasi.

ARG. 8 Records of the Office of the District Commissionor of Juaso (Asante Akim).

ARG. 9 Records of the Office of the District Commisionor of Bekwai.

ARG. 12 Records of the Office of the Judicial Advisor.

ARG. 17 Records of the Office of the Ghana Young Pioneer Movement.

In the above record groups, the researcher can find materials dealing with Native Affairs, Forestry Matters, Land and Boundary Matters, Land and Mining Concessions, Diaries, Reports, Census, and Town Layouts. They include also matters relating to developments, education, and health.

Access to the records are at present free, however, this is subject to the Thirty-year Rule of confidentiality -- i.e., some records will not be made available until they have attained the age of 30 years. Members and researchers interested in using the Archives are warmly welcome. You may also contact the Archives through Mr. Thomas K. Aning (The Regional Archivist), P. O. Box 1990, Kumasi, Ghana, Tel: 051-22723.
